Uploading documents
How to upload one or many files to a matter or client, and the allowed types and size
Last updated:
You can upload matter or client documents from the Documents page, or from the Documents panel inside a matter.
Steps
- Open Documents and press Upload (or Upload document on a matter page, where the location is set automatically).
- Drag files into the box or press choose files. You can upload several at once. On a phone there is a Take photo button.
- Pick the Matter (or No matter (general document) and type a Folder name).
- Pick a Category. If the file is a copy of a paper original the firm received, tick This is a copy of an original the firm received.
- Wait for Checking and then Uploading to finish; a "documents uploaded" message appears.
Types and size
- Allowed: PDF, Word (.docx) and images (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC).
- Maximum 50 MB per file.
If it doesn't work
- "File type not allowed", "File is larger than 50 MB" or "The file is empty": change the file.
- "Pick a matter or type a folder name for a general document": a general document needs a folder.
- A message starting "You've reached the … plan limit" that mentions storage: your plan's storage is full; see storage limits.
- "You cannot upload here": uploading is for owners, partners, lawyers and paralegals; accountants may upload financial documents only (the category is set to Invoice / financial automatically).
