The paper originals register
Record paper originals the firm holds and document their return to the client with a date and recipient
Last updated:
When the firm receives paper originals from a client, the Originals register lets you record where they are kept and then document handing them back on request. The register does not store the paper itself; it is a record of what happens.
Register a document as an original
- When uploading, tick This is a copy of an original the firm received, or open the document later.
- In the Paper original section tick The firm holds the paper original.
- Enter Received on and Stored at (e.g. "Office safe — shelf 3") and press Save.
The document shows an Original badge.
Return the original to the client
- Open the document and press Return original to client.
- Enter Returned on and Handed to (the recipient's name and capacity). Both are required.
- Press Record return. The Original returned badge appears and the event is logged in the document's activity.
Following the register
The Originals register tab in Documents shows two tables: Originals held by the firm (document, matter or client, received, stored at) and Returned originals. You can also filter the library with Originals only. Remove from register takes the document off the register without deleting it.
Registering is available to those who can edit documents: owners, partners, lawyers, paralegals, and accountants (financial documents only).
