Firm templates, creating and editing

Start from a site template, a ready starter or from scratch, then edit, activate or deactivate the template

Last updated:

Firm templates are your firm's own document templates, containing merge fields that fill in automatically when you generate. Find them under Documents, then Firm templates.

Creating a template

Press New template and pick a route:

  • Copy a site template: Start from a site template lets you search the 48 contract templates and copy one to your firm with Copy to firm. Templates marked fields come with their fields ready.
  • Starter: in Starter templates add an engagement letter, power-of-attorney request or memorandum in one click with Add, then edit it.
  • From scratch: Start a blank template and write the text yourself.

Editing a template

  1. Type the Template name and choose the Category.
  2. Write the Template text in the Editor tab (bold, italic, headings, lists, centring), or edit the code in the HTML tab.
  3. Insert fields with Insert field (fields explained).
  4. Try Preview against a real matter with Preview with matter; if "Unknown fields" appears, correct their names.
  5. Keep Active (listed when generating) ticked and press Save template.

From the templates list you can Activate or Deactivate a template, Edit, Delete or Generate. Deleting a template does not affect documents already generated from it, and editing affects future documents only.

Who can

  • Create, edit and delete: owners, partners and lawyers.
  • A paralegal can view and generate from templates only, and sees "Your role can view and generate from firm templates only."
