Share a document with the client through the portal

How to make a document visible to the client in their portal and stop sharing whenever you like

Last updated:

A client sees only the documents you explicitly share with them in their portal. Sharing is done from each document's page.

Sharing

  1. Open the document from Documents.
  2. In the Client sharing section press Share with client. The status shows Shared with client and "Document shared with the client." appears.
  3. To share, the document must be linked to a matter or contact; otherwise you see "Link the document to a matter or contact first."

The client sees the document if it sits on one of their matters or on their own contact card, provided the portal is on for your firm and they have active access (details).

Stop sharing

Press Stop sharing ("Sharing stopped." appears). The document disappears from their portal immediately. You can trace this under Activity as "Shared with client" and "Sharing stopped".

What the client sees

The latest version of the document, downloaded through short-lived links. Uploading a new version updates what they see. Archived documents don't appear for them.

Tracking what you shared

In the Client portal card on the contact page, the Documents shared with the client section lists everything they see. In the library filter choose Shared with client only. You can also attach a shared document to a message in the conversation.
