Inviting a client to the portal
Send an email invitation, resend or revoke it, and what happens when it is accepted
Last updated:
You invite a client from their card in Contacts. They receive an email with a link to accept.
Before you start
- Turn the portal on for the firm (the Client portal tab in Settings).
- The contact's role must be "client"; otherwise "The portal is for contacts with the “client” role." appears.
- They need a valid email address, otherwise "Add an email address to this contact to invite them." appears.
- Don't invite an archived contact.
Sending the invitation
- Open the contact and scroll to the Client portal card.
- Under the status "Not invited" read "The invitation goes to …" to confirm the email.
- Press Invite to portal. "Invitation sent." appears and the status becomes "Invited on … — waiting for acceptance".
The client receives an email titled "… invites you to the client portal" with an accept button. The link is valid for 14 days.
Resend and revoke
- Resend invitation: sends the same link with a fresh 14-day window. Use it too when the status is "Invitation expired".
- Revoke invitation: stops the link immediately; you can send a new invitation later (a new invitation also removes the pending one).
After acceptance
The status becomes "Active since …", you get a notification that the client accepted, and an Open conversation button appears. Acceptance links the client's account to their contact, and re-enabling their access later needs no new invitation.
